This course is designed to help students increase reading fluency, as well as cultivate and expand English vocabulary through readings. The focus of the skills and activities is to teach students how to approach reading without having to continually stop and use a dictionary, such as scanning, skimming, predicting, and identifying main ideas. When students become less dictionary-dependent, reading faster becomes more automatic; in turn, they should be able to use their cognitive skills to better comprehend what they read. Thus, the final aim is to not only train students become fluent readers but also let them enjoy reading. The essential part of the joy of reading is being able to pick up a book and comprehend it, without having to struggle through the task of reading.
